10 Reasons for Beginning Your Day with a Devotion

Reason #2 Listening

At the climactic conclusion of the movie, The Color Purple,
there is a soul-stirring song entitled, "God is Trying to Tell You
Something." It reminds me of a similar song I led as a member
of the Mount Hermon Baptist Church Young Adult Choir in
New Orleans, Louisiana, "The Lord is Speaking to You."
Both songs accent another vital reason for beginning the
day with a morning devotion (even if it's just five minutes):
Spiritual Listening.

There are two dimensions to such listening: 1. Listening
to God, or Loving Mystery, and 2. Listening to your Heart,
your Soulful Self. In both instances, the key is having an
open heart--notice the word at the center of heart--to what it is
that God and our innermost being has to tell us. These
matters are secrets only to the extent to which we fail
to secret ourselves away for a time of dedicated listening.

One more thing, Holy Spirit and Sacred Soul share a
common trait. Both often speak in a gentle voice that
is just above a whisper, guaranteeing that those who
hear, really want to.

2. Quote

"If there is one consistent thing that stops people committed
to doing creative work from doing it, it is this: a lack of
necessary silence in their lives, an inability or unwillingness
to find and stay with the stillness, to regularly create empty
time in their day or their week.
